The promotion of press freedom and
opposition to restrictions in freedom of expression, is central to
the Society's lobbying.
On a subscription basis, our legal
advisors also provide an editorial law advice service, offering both general and pre-publication
advice to editors and journalists on all areas
including:
Libel
Contempt of court
Court reporting restrictions
Copyright Breach of confidence
Access to information, data protection and PCC
matters
The NS legal advisors offer in-house
training to member publishers on all aspects of the law affecting
journalism
The NS also handles press facilities for
regional newspapers, including Royal Rota passes, Prime Ministerial visits, major sporting events
and high profile court cases.
It also acts as a gatekeeper for the
UK press card
scheme.
The communications department runs the
secretariat for the Newspaper
Conference, the forum for London
editors and political correspondents of regional daily newspapers
in NS membership, organising its quarterly and annual lunches with
Cabinet ministers and other high-profile figures.
